  A. New Evidence
2. The Rabe-Bemis Diving Expedition in August 2000

2.3.7.1 The forward opening into deck 1

When searching for the opening cut by Rockwater divers in December 1994 into the hull in way of deck 1 forward the following was established:

  • several previously intact windows in way of deck 4 were found to be smashed as can be seen on the two images below.

  • The Rockwater divers had cut two openings of approximately 2 m x 2 m into the port hull plating in way of deck 1, i.e. one into the forward part in way of frame 105 which created access to the athwartships alleyway leading to the spiral stairway which connected the 1st deck with the swimming pool and the sauna areas on 0-deck. The second opening was cut further aft in way of the athwartships alleyway which led to the forward part of the engine room. After the divers had examined the respective areas the cut out parts of the hull plating were placed back into initial position and spot welded to the hull. When the ROV inspected the area in question in August 2000 the opening was found to be open and the cover lying on the superstructure in way of deck 4 as can be seen on the image below. It can also be seen that several wire slings were fitted to the edges of the cover by means of which the heavy steel plate was apparently lifted off the opening, placed on deck 4 and then left there.

This means that the forward opening was found to be uncovered, another indication of persons visiting the wreck, with the permission or toleration of the Swedish Government, a fact which the said Government, however, strictly denies.

  • The aft opening into deck 1 was not inspected.
