Since sand is normally neither available in the swimming pool compartment nor in the sauna compartment in large quantities, it has to be concluded that it must have entered the area from the outside, i.e. there must have been one or more big enough holes in the hull plating to permit the penetration of large quantities of sand to fill at least the swimming pool compartment to a substantial degree.
